FLEETING YEARS: A DOCUMENTARY COLLECTIVE

“A collective of brilliant and simpatico collaborators who will galvanise, enrich and showcase what you're doing and take it to another level.
I’ve worked with them for a number of years and they have the intelligence, empathy, sensitivity and craft to give your work wings.”
Professor Ewan Fernie, The Shakespeare Institute

"I've worked closely with them for almost two decades, presenting over twenty hours of BBC science documentaries. No other TV producers I've worked with have come close to their sheer professionalism and creativity. Their films are incredibly well researched with the highest levels of scientific accuracy and integrity."
Professor Jim Al Khalili, winner of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication

"The films they made for us were more than I could have imagined: smart, joyful, technically brilliant, and bound together by a shared love of our respective crafts. Their collaborative spirit is a joy to behold!"
Scott Jackson, Artistic Director of
Shakespeare at Notre Dame University and Shakespeare for the Common Good

“Brilliant camera-work, editing and post-production ingenuity ... they are among the most active, engaged and effective producers of factual programming in the UK. Highly recommended."
Professor Simon Schaffer, University of Cambridge

"Meeting Andrew has been transformative.  He has helped to bring my research to life, and to bring it to a wider public audience.  We have captured important stories that otherwise might have disappeared.  Andrew has also been incredibly open to working in different ways and, in particular, finding ways to make our films fully accessible to deaf as well as hearing audiences."
Dr Abigail Rokison-Woodall, Associate Professor in Shakespeare and Theatre, The University of Birmingham

WHO WE ARE

We are Andrew Smith, Andy Jackson, Paul Sen and James Aldred - between us we have won two BAFTAs, four Emmys, five BAFTA nominations, two Peabody Awards - and one of us has even been shortlisted for an Oscar.

We've made award-winning films for all the major broadcasters, from the BBC (including Horizon, Panorama, Green Planet, Planet Earth and Africa strands) to Channel 4's Dispatches and Cutting Edge, from National Geographic to Discovery, Netflix, CNN, PBS America, Vice News, Apple TV, even Hollywood movies and  prime time BBC dramas. We've also written books and made radio documentaries and podcasts.

Now, we're working directly with charities, campaigners, artists, educational and arts organisations, writers, thinkers and change-makers, to create compelling and involving films to spread the word.

We can help you shape your work into gripping and effective narratives and create memorable videos which put those values into action. We are Oxbridge graduates with 30 years experience making documentaries which explore cutting edge academic topics and themes. We specialise in digging deeply into subjects and topics to make sure we understand them and are able to translate them into convincing on-screen narratives.

Communication has never been more important - or more difficult - in a world of saturated social media. For academics, the upcoming Research Excellence Framework calls public engagement for academics "a cornerstone of research excellence". For artists and cultural organisations, it can attract audiences and shape messages - and for campaigners, it can help change hearts and minds, and raise vital funds.

MORE TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR WORK:

‘How to Make a Difference in Africa’  has been a powerful, awareness-raising communications tool for AfriKids. It won a prestigious award, bringing our work to a new audience, and a screening of the film with 50 of our closest supporters was a brilliant platform."
AfriKids, community-powered change for kids in Ghana

"Working with them has been an incredible privilege. With an editorial eye for both the big picture and the fine detail of filmmaking, they masterfully bring any topic to life. For researchers who are looking to showcase their work to their institutions, funders or for media dissemination, you will not find a more experienced or collaborative team to work with."
Professor Gillian Forrester, Professor of Comparative Cognition, University of Sussex

"They captured wonderful material that encapsulated the work of our charity and managed to showcase our core values in action. Andrew was incredible, he knew what needed to be captured and did so without us even noticing he was there. He asked brilliant and revealing questions that got to the heart of our mission. The material they capture, their knowledge and understanding of the arts and charitable purposes is excellent."
Jennifer Higham, The Actors' Workshop and Actors From The London Stage

‘Working with them was an absolute joy: it was clear from the beginning that they really ‘got’ what we were about, and the results bore that out admirably. I couldn’t recommend highly enough.’
Professor Andrew Kirkman, The Barber Institute of Fine Arts

‘"Watching their stunning documentary about the making of my first feature film has galvanised my belief in the work. On top of that, the beautiful short films they made for my crowd-funding campaign were a huge help in exceeding our target and securing our budget.
I recommend them with my whole heart."
Joseph Millson, award-winning Hollywood and RSC actor and film director

“We have never had so many social media views as we did for the short film they made for us. They made the whole process very easy and we were delighted with the finished film!”
Professor Claudia Hammond, Visiting Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology, University of Sussex.

"An amazing experience. Andrew was very thorough in getting the science right, not oversimplified but easily understandable by non- specialists. I would recommend them to anyone who wishes to highlight their academic work to inspire the next generation and help make science accessible for everyone."
Dr Ornella Bertrand,, Paleoecology & Biochronology Research Group, University of Barcelona

"Consummate professionals - I am thrilled with the finished article and would recommend them to anyone."
Martin Bax OBE, Founder and President, Frome Arts Festival
